28/06/09 Ashmore 213 a/o beat Gillingham 170/9 (10 pts)
This was always going to be a tricky game against an Ashmore side that had so far only lost once this season. Ryan again did the business losing the toss & we were put into the field by the opposition on a very humid but showery day. Almost from ball one the pitch had the usual "Ashmore" suspicion about it with the ball bouncing head high to the batsmen off a length. Despite this they decided the best form of defence was to attack which meant they scored well but also gave us a chance to take wickets. We were well in the game after 20 overs having gotten 4 wickets- if we could continue to hold our catches we would have a chance. Unfortunately the red ball seemed to change format to a volcanic rock & we simply couldnt hold on to it. With the way the fine system is going we must almost have enough to pay for the end of season presentaion already- Ian you better start arranging that overdraft mate!! The Ashmore batmen capitalised on their chance and despite a late flurry of wickets for Bissy & Emo a total of 213 all out always seemed to be a big score. This was further cemented when we lost our first two wickets with the first two balls of our innings- dont forget to pay your fine skip!! From here we never recovered and it was only Reedy that looked comfortable with a well played 90 that held the innings together. We did manage to scrape 170 for maximum batting points and prevented Ashmore from the full 20 by preserving the last wicket but all in all a disappointing result. Next week sees the turn of the season- come on lads we owe Sherborne another whooping!!
04/07/09 Gillingham 240/4 beat Sherborne 339/5 (17pts)
This fixture marked the turn of the season and we were hoping to keep the pressure on the boys at the top with a good win. Skip- save your energy & dont bother to walk to the square to do the toss- just ask what the opposition want to do from now on!! Put into the field (again) the pitch was popping from ball one which would make it difficult to get wickets. Bissy managed to get a couple of early breakthroughs but we were unable to capitalize on our good position as the pitch became easier to bat on once the shine had gone from the ball. All the bowlers tried hard but a couple of the Sherborne batsmen set the pace of the game by getting beyond the half century mark- one of which in my own words "never seen a worse batsman get a 50!!" Mind you- this was partly due to Ryan repeatedly chucking pies at waist height with the words "spank me" written all over it!! In general we did keep extras to a minimum, field well & catch well- didnt we Lee??! 239 was a good score but we knew with our line up we would have a chance depending on which which batting side turned up. Tom and Reedy saw off the opening 10 overs despite tight bowling. Their dismisals brought Ryan & Deano to the crease & they took the attack to the bowlers from the start. Both played flowing shots picking up singles through the gaps & punishing the bad balls all round the ground. At the 30 over mark we were still well on the run rate & both batsmen had reached their half century. Ryan wasnt satisfied with this and almost single-handedly took the game away from the opposition with some fantastic hitting which in turn brought up his maiden century for the club to the delight of the players & the "crowd"! Lee joined him at the crease late on & duly hit the winning runs which brought us another good win! I did hear though that Ryan didnt live up to his promise when he got home!!

16/08/09 Gillingham 209/8 beat Poole Town 169/9- 19 pts
Poole's first win of the season came at our expense in the reverse fixture so we were out to put the record straight and gain revenge. Ryan actually won the toss and elected to bat first on the artificial and despite some tight bowling Reedy and Long Tom set us a solid platform for a good innings. Reedy went on to score a "steady paced" 70 whilst the middle came and went more often than the waves at Weymouth beach. A few big hits from Richy Garrett & some unique placed shots by our guest batsman Monky Tonk got us to a repectable score of 209/8. Unfortunately Bissy twisted his knee in his second over & that not only meant we were short of bowlers but also i was likely to make up some ground in the wide-boy running! The opening Poole batsmen looked comfortable and score at a good rate for the opening 18 overs of their innings but then both fell with the score of 85 on the board. This included the catch of the season by Tom at 1st slip- it was quite remarkable!! From there on Reedy & Ryan turned the screw & bearing in mind we only had 10 in the field we kept the pressure firmly on the Poole batsmen. The only blemish to the game is the square leg umpire obviously forgot his glasses or was watching another game by denying us the final wicket off the last ball through a Garrett stumping. If we can win our last two games we still have the chance to get promoted so come on lads- lets have a full team next week!
